If I move from Iowa to Minnesota for 1 year, when or do I have to buy new car insurance (cheaper in Iowa)?

The car is registered under my parents who still live in Iowa, but will primarily be driving in MN, I don%26#039;t know if that changes anything. Also, would I have to change my license plate as well (parents still live in Iowa)?

Typically, the address of the registration/plates and insurance must match. To be 100% legal and ethical, you would tell the insurance company that the car would be %26quot;garaged/housed%26quot; in MN for the year. It may alter your rate, though, and for these %26#039;temporary%26#039; moves, many people just overlook this call to the insurance company.

The main problem may come from law enforcement. many States require you to have their States plates and license after 30 days residency. If you are not in college or the military, you could be ticketed, especially if you have a job there. Check with your local insurer.
Reply:No problem. You may want to let your agent know you%26#039;re in another state.

As long as the plates and the operator%26#039;s license are from the same state you%26#039;re OK. Most states make allowance for students, but if you don%26#039;t claim student status, you need to re-register the car and get the Minnesota operator%26#039;s licence within thirty days.
Reply:For automobile insurance the obvious way to get a good rate is do a policy comparison on car policies. Make sure that you choose similar options with the same limits, car make, location, etc so that all things are a good comparison.

What I most often recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.lowratetoday.com since they have discount insurers and can give multiple quotes on car insurance polices.
Reply:yes they will have to change the plates. im not sure what car you drive or the rates in your area will be but you can get a free online quote here...
